St. Andrew Christmas Novena

St. Andrew Christmas Novena

(The Christmas Anticipation Prayer)

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which the Son of God was born of the most pure Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in the piercing cold.

In that hour vouchsafe, I beseech Thee, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires (mention your intentions here), through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of His blessed Mother.

Amen.

Pray the above prayer on each of the 15 beads of the chaplet daily, from November 30th until December 25th

HISTORY

The feast of St. Andrew (Nov. 30th) is the marker that determines the start of Advent. The first Sunday of Advent begins on the Sunday closest to November 30th, which is where it gets name. Although traditional novenas (Latin for nine) last 9 days and this last 25 days, it still remains in the tradition of an "anticipation prayer".

The St. Andrew Christmas Novena, also known as The Christmas Anticipation Prayer, focuses on the moment of Christ's Birth. It is over 100 years old, and it is believed that whoever recites this prayer 15 times a day from the feast day of St. Andrew until Christmas will obtain what is asked. Do not be afraid to ask for miracles. Praying this novena is a wonderful way to live out Advent and prepare one's heart for the Incarnation, the coming of Jesus at Christmas.

O glorious Prince of St. Michael, chief and commander of the heavenly hosts, guardian of the souls, vanquisher of rebel spirits, servant in the house of the Divine King, and our admirable conductor, thou who dost shine with excellence and superhuman virtue, vouchsafe to deliver us from evil, who turn to thee with confidence, and enable us by thy gracious protection to serve God more and more faithfully every day.

Pray for us, O glorious St. Michael, Prince of the Church of Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Almighty and Everlasting God, who by a prodigy of goodness and a merciful desire for the salvation of all men, hast appointed the most glorious Archangel, St. Michael, Prince of Thy Church, make us worthy, we beseech Thee, to be delivered from all our enemies that none of them may harass us at the hour of death, but that we may be conducted by him into the august presence of Thy Divine Mercy. This we beg through the merits of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

HISTORY

St. Michael appeared one day to a devote Portuguese Carmelite nun, Antonia d'Astonac, and told her that he wished to be honored by nine salutations to the nine Choirs of Angels: Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Powers, Virtues, Principalities, Archangels and Angels. In 1851 Pope Pius IX approved this vision.

PROMISE OF ST. MICHAEL

"Whoever would practice this devotion in his honor would have, when approaching the Holy Table, an escort of nine angels chosen from each of the nine Choirs. In addition, for the daily recital of these nine salutations, he promised his continual assistance and that of all the holy angels during life, and after death deliverance from Purgatory for themselves and all their relations."

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

Amen

The Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be they name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

The Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

The Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen

The Fatima Prayer

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy Mercy.

The Hail Holy Queen (The Salve Regina)

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this, our exile, shows unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V. Pray for us oh holy mother of God.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let Us Pray

O God, whose only begotten Son, by his life, death, and resurrection has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech thee, that while meditating upon these mysteries of the most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord.

Amen.
